The functions and responsibilities of GHQ Rawalpindi include:
- Command and Control: GHQ exercises command and control over all the army formations and units across Pakistan. It ensures coordination and synchronization of operations, deployments, and training activities.
- Strategic Planning: GHQ formulates strategic plans and policies to address national security challenges and threats. It conducts assessments, develops operational concepts, and plans for the defense of the country.
- Operational Readiness: GHQ oversees the preparedness of the army to respond to any potential threats or emergencies. It ensures that the army is adequately equipped, trained, and ready to undertake missions and operations.
- Personnel Management: GHQ manages the personnel matters of the army, including recruitment, training, promotions, postings, and career development of officers and soldiers. It also ensures the discipline and welfare of army personnel.
- Intelligence and Security: GHQ is responsible for gathering and analyzing intelligence, conducting security assessments, and implementing measures to safeguard army installations and personnel.
GHQ Rawalpindi is an integral part of the defense infrastructure of Pakistan and works in close coordination with the Ministry of Defense and other security agencies. It is headed by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), who is the highest-ranking military officer in the army.
