The National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) is a Pakistani government agency that was established in 2009 to serve as a central coordination and monitoring agency for all activities related to counterterrorism in the country. Its primary objective is to develop a comprehensive counterterrorism strategy that aims to identify, prevent, and combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
NACTA is responsible for coordinating and monitoring the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP), which is a comprehensive strategy developed in the aftermath of the deadly attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar in 2014. The plan aims to counter terrorism and extremism by strengthening the rule of law, addressing the root causes of terrorism, and ensuring the effective implementation of counterterrorism measures.
Some of NACTA’s key functions include:
- Developing a national counterterrorism strategy and coordinating its implementation
- Collecting, analyzing, and disseminating intelligence related to terrorism
- Providing technical assistance to law enforcement agencies in the investigation and prosecution of terrorism cases
- Conducting research on terrorism and extremism and developing counter-narratives to extremist ideologies
- Coordinating with international partners and organizations to counter transnational terrorism threats
NACTA works closely with other law enforcement and intelligence agencies in Pakistan, including the Pakistan Army, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and other provincial and federal law enforcement agencies.
